With the introduction of an ecological paper mill in the community of Los Angeles/Malacatoya the foundation “Casa de los Tres Mundos” strives to create independent, regular and continuous work for 20 people in an area of high and season-dependent unemployment. The paper mill will also be a permanent source of income for the community to administer future projects and acquisitions. This project was launched in 2003-04.
The creation and promotion of small enterprises such as the paper mill helps to ensure employment and strengthens community bonds. Responsible handling of natural raw materials in the papermaking process sensitizes the population to the protection of their environment. This enterprise, with its innovative use of agricultural byproducts like banana plant fibers and coconut, can serve as a model for other development projects. It can also serve as a model for changing the tradition of monoculture in Nicaragua.
